A Level Retake Support — Done Properly
Retake With a Plan — Not Just Extra Hours
A Level retakes require a completely different approach from the original sitting. You have already covered the content — the question is why the marks did not come through. Our approach starts with that question and works backwards from there.
We identify whether the issue is content gaps, exam technique, time management under pressure, or a combination — and then build a precise plan to address exactly those things before the next sitting.
- Previous script and result reviewed at assessment
- Examiner mark scheme technique built into every session
- Past paper practice under timed, exam conditions
- UCAS implications and clearing timeline discussed
Resit Preparation and Strategic Planning
We cover both the academic preparation and the strategic decisions that come with A Level retakes.
Summer Resit Preparation
The main A Level resit window runs May–June. We offer preparation programmes from January through to the exam — structured in two phases: content consolidation (Jan–March) and intensive past paper phase (April–May).
January Resit Preparation
A small number of A Level modules and subjects offer a January resit window. Where this applies to your subject and exam board, we offer targeted short-turnaround intensive preparation from October/November onwards.
Grade E/D to C/B Pathway
Our most common retake scenario. Students who achieved E or D often have content knowledge but are losing marks on application, analysis questions, and extended writing. We target these specifically and consistently deliver 1–2 grade improvements.
UCAS Clearing Strategy
If you are retaking to meet a conditional offer or to improve your clearing options, we help you plan the resit timeline around UCAS deadlines, results day, and clearing windows — so your preparation is calibrated to your actual goal, not just the exam in isolation.
Exam Technique & Timing
A Level exams heavily reward structured, well-timed answers. We work on the specific high-mark question types for your subject — extended writing, calculation methods, analysis and evaluation — where the most marks are available and most often lost.
Small Group or Individual
Choose the format that suits your situation. Small groups (max 6) offer structured weekly preparation alongside other retake students. Individual tuition is available for students who need a fully bespoke, accelerated programme.
How We Improve A Level Grades on Retake
Diagnose Why Marks Were Lost
We review your previous result and, where possible, your marked scripts. We identify the specific question types, topics, and technique issues that cost you marks — then build the entire programme around those.
Mark Scheme Mastery
A Level examiners follow specific marking criteria. We teach students exactly what an examiner wants to see in each question type — not just the right answer, but the right structure, language, and level of detail to access maximum marks.
Regular Past Paper Practice
Timed past paper sessions in exam conditions are a core part of every week. We mark every paper against the real mark scheme and spend time on the debrief — understanding why marks were awarded or withheld is as important as answering the question.
UCAS & Clearing Awareness
We build in regular check-ins on your UCAS status and clearing position. Your preparation intensity and target grade may need to shift depending on what offers are on the table — we keep this front of mind throughout.

A Level Retake Questions
The main A Level resit window runs in May and June each year, with results in August. This is the primary window for all subjects.
A small number of exam boards and subjects also offer a January resit window for specific units or components. This is less common since the move to linear A Levels, but does still apply in some cases. Contact us to find out whether your subject and exam board offer a January option.
Most universities accept retake grades — and many conditional offers explicitly allow for resits. However, some highly selective universities (particularly Oxford, Cambridge, and certain medical schools) may specify that they require grades achieved in a single sitting, or may give lower weighting to resit grades. You should check the policy of any specific university you are applying to.
For students using clearing or applying through adjustment, retake grades are treated the same as first-sitting grades by the majority of institutions.
For the summer window, the recommended lead time is 4–6 months — starting in January gives you approximately 5 months of structured preparation before the May/June exams. This allows time for thorough content consolidation and an intensive past paper phase in the final 6–8 weeks.
Some students achieve significant improvements with shorter preparation windows (8–10 weeks of very intensive work) — particularly if the knowledge base is largely in place and the issue is primarily technique. After a diagnostic session, we can give you an honest assessment of what is achievable in your specific timeline.
If you are retaking to meet a deferred conditional offer, the university will typically wait for your August results before confirming your place. This is a well-established route and universities manage it routinely.
If you did not receive any offers or are planning to reapply through UCAS, retake grades improve your predicted or actual grades on a new application. Your personal statement and any new school references will also be relevant.
For clearing, A Level retake results published in August put you in a strong position to compete for remaining places. We discuss the clearing timeline with all retake students as part of our programme so you are fully prepared for results day.
