Secondary School Tuition — FAQs

Everything parents and students in Ilford need to know about secondary school tuition — answered clearly by our teaching team.

What We Cover

We provide secondary school tuition for students in Years 7 through 11. Our groups are organised by year group and ability level so that every student is working at the right pace — not too fast and not held back.

If your child is in Year 10 or Year 11 and preparing for GCSEs, you may also want to look at our dedicated GCSE tuition programme, which offers more intensive exam-focused preparation.

We offer tuition in the core secondary subjects:

Maths: Number, algebra, geometry, statistics, and problem-solving. We follow the national curriculum and extend beyond it where students are ready.

English: Reading and analysis, writing skills, grammar, and literature. We support both Language and Literature across all year groups.

Science: Combined Science covering Biology, Chemistry, and Physics at secondary level. We can also support Triple Science for higher-ability students from Year 9 onwards.

Not sure which subject your child needs most? Contact us and we'll recommend based on a free diagnostic assessment.

Common signs that a child would benefit from secondary tuition include: falling behind in one or more subjects, struggling to keep up with the pace of school, losing confidence, receiving concerning feedback from teachers, or upcoming assessments and exams that feel overwhelming.

Even high-achieving students can benefit — many parents use tuition to stretch their child beyond the classroom, consolidate their understanding, or prepare for selective sets and option choices.

The best first step is a free assessment. We will evaluate your child's current level and give you an honest, no-obligation recommendation.

How Our Sessions Work

Our secondary groups are capped at a maximum of 6 students. This is significantly smaller than most tuition centres and ensures that every student receives meaningful teacher attention during each session — not just one or two chances to ask a question.

Smaller groups also allow our tutors to track individual progress closely and adjust the pace of teaching in real time. Students are grouped by year and ability to ensure the level of work is appropriate for everyone in the class.

Most secondary students attend once per week per subject. This gives enough time for school learning to settle and for your child to attempt any work set between sessions.

For students who are significantly behind or approaching exams, twice-weekly sessions in a subject are available and often recommended. We'll advise you on the right frequency after the initial assessment.

We run sessions on weekday evenings and throughout the weekend. Specific available slots depend on your child's year group and subject — contact us to check current availability and timetable options.

Online sessions are also available for families who prefer to study from home or who cannot travel to our Ilford centre.

Supporting the Move to Secondary School

The transition from primary to secondary school is one of the biggest academic jumps children face. The pace increases, subjects become more demanding, and children are often expected to work more independently. Starting tuition at the beginning of Year 7 — or even in the summer before — can make a significant difference to how confidently your child settles in.

Our transition support helps students consolidate their primary school Maths and English, plug any gaps before they widen, and develop the study habits needed to succeed at secondary level. Many parents find that a summer tuition programme before Year 7 gives their child a meaningful head start.

We take a structured, reassuring approach. Our tutors identify exactly where a student is struggling — whether it's a specific topic, the pace of learning, or study skills and organisation — and address those issues directly.

We do not simply repeat what school has already done. We find the gaps, explain concepts differently where school hasn't landed, and build the student's confidence to engage more actively in class.

Parents are updated regularly, so you always know what is being worked on and can reinforce the same messages at home.

Yes. Year 9 is an important year — it is when the GCSE content begins in most schools, and students who are fully on track by the end of Year 9 are in a much stronger position when the exam years begin.

Our Year 9 programme bridges secondary school learning and GCSE preparation. We cover the content that will feed directly into GCSE courses while consolidating any remaining gaps from Years 7 and 8. Students who start with us in Year 9 typically find the GCSE years significantly less stressful.

One-to-One Options

Yes. Individual tuition is available for secondary students who need a fully personalised approach. This is particularly suited to students who are significantly behind and need intensive catch-up, students preparing for school entrance exams or set tests, or students who simply prefer working in a one-to-one environment.

Individual sessions are tailored entirely to your child's curriculum, pace, and needs. The tutor will work through exactly what your child's school is covering, at the right level of challenge for them.
