Structured Support for the Most Important Primary Exam

KS2 SATs are sat by all Year 6 pupils in May. The results inform secondary school setting and shape your child's academic confidence going forward. Our Year 6 programme covers all three tested areas — Maths, Reading, and SPAG — with targeted preparation aligned to the exact question formats used in the national tests.

Beyond the tests themselves, SATs results are used alongside teacher-assessed grades to build a full picture of your child's attainment. Our tutors understand both the exam and the broader KS2 framework, so preparation is thorough and well-rounded.

  • Past paper practice from the start of the programme
  • Exam technique taught explicitly alongside subject content
  • Teacher-assessed grade context included
  • Regular progress updates to parents

What's Covered in Year 6 SATs Preparation

Every topic tested in the KS2 SATs papers, taught systematically with exam technique built in throughout.

Maths — Arithmetic

The Paper 1 arithmetic paper tests calculation speed and accuracy. We drill all four operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, and order of operations under timed conditions.

Maths — Reasoning

Papers 2 and 3 test problem-solving and reasoning. We cover number, ratio, geometry, statistics, and multi-step word problems — teaching pupils how to approach unfamiliar questions.

Reading Comprehension

The KS2 Reading paper tests retrieval, inference, vocabulary, and structure. We teach pupils to read strategically, locate evidence, and answer mark-scheme questions accurately.

SPAG — Grammar & Punctuation

The Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling test covers a broad range of technical language knowledge. We work through every tested grammar topic systematically with targeted practice.

Past Paper Practice

Regular past paper sessions under timed conditions. Answers marked and reviewed in class so students understand exactly where marks were lost and how to correct them.

Exam Technique & Confidence

Time management, question prioritisation, checking strategies, and managing exam nerves — all taught explicitly so pupils walk into the exam hall prepared and confident.

Past Papers Under Timed Conditions

From the midpoint of the programme, students complete full past papers in timed conditions. We mark, review, and act on every result.

"The small group format means my daughter actually gets to ask questions and have her answers looked at properly. The tutors know exactly what the SATs markers want. She exceeded the expected standard in all three subjects — we are thrilled."

Sara PatelParent · Daughter, Year 6 SATs

"I appreciated that the tutors understood the teacher-assessed grades element as well as the tests themselves. It felt like holistic preparation rather than just drilling past papers. My daughter's confidence in English and Maths improved noticeably."

L
Liyana MendisParent · Daughter, Year 6

"Ark Tuition's SPAG sessions were excellent — my son always struggled with grammar but the tutors made it accessible and consistent. He got a high score on the SPAG paper which we honestly didn't expect. Very grateful for the support."

Common Questions — Year 6 SATs

KS2 SATs are held in the second week of May each year. The tests span three days and cover Maths (arithmetic and reasoning), Reading, and Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (SPAG).
We cover all three SATs subjects: Maths (Arithmetic and Reasoning papers), Reading Comprehension, and SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar). Each subject can be booked individually or as a combined package.
Ideally by September of Year 6 to allow the full academic year for structured preparation. However, starting after Christmas is still beneficial — we adapt the programme to make the most of the available time.
Yes. Past paper practice is a core part of the programme. We introduce past papers progressively and move toward full timed papers as the May exams approach. All papers are marked and reviewed in class.
SATs results are not directly used for secondary school admissions in most cases, but they inform setting decisions in Year 7 and shape your child's academic confidence going into secondary school. Strong SATs results matter.
A maximum of 6 students per group. This ensures every child receives proper attention in every session — not just generic instruction to a large class.
