Top 5 Tips for 11 Plus Success

Guidance from our tutors, based on years of preparing children for grammar school entry.

1

Start Early — Year 4 is the Right Time

The 11 Plus is sat at the start of Year 6. Starting preparation in Year 4 gives your child two full years to build genuine understanding rather than rushing in the final months. Early starters perform more consistently on exam day because they have had time to develop confidence alongside knowledge.

2

Focus on Weak Areas, Not Just Favourite Subjects

Many children enjoy English but avoid Maths, or excel at Verbal Reasoning while struggling with Non-Verbal. Use our Maths Revision Checklist to identify gaps honestly, and allocate more practice time to areas where your child loses marks — not just to topics they already know well.

3

Practise Under Timed Conditions Regularly

Speed is as important as accuracy in the 11 Plus. From Year 5 onwards, ensure your child is completing practice papers under proper timed conditions. This builds the habit of working at pace and reduces the shock of exam pressure when the real day arrives.

4

Build Vocabulary Every Single Day

Verbal Reasoning and English comprehension both depend heavily on vocabulary. Download our Vocabulary List and commit to learning five new words per day. Small, consistent daily habits compound over a two-year preparation period into a substantial advantage on the day of the exam.

5

Review Mistakes — Do Not Just Move On

After every practice paper, go through every wrong answer carefully with your child. Understanding why an error was made is far more valuable than simply completing another paper. Keep a mistakes log and revisit those topics a week later to check understanding has genuinely improved.
