Manage Your Workload — Do Not Let Any Subject Fall Behind
A Level demands independent study across multiple demanding subjects simultaneously. Students who fall behind in one subject by October of Year 12 often spend the rest of the course trying to catch up. Use our Revision Timetable Template to balance all subjects from the very first term — consistent weekly effort in all subjects is far more effective than intensive catch-up periods.
Start Revision Early — Year 12 Content Is Examined in Year 13
A Level exams at the end of Year 13 cover two full years of content. Many students make the mistake of treating Year 12 as a year to settle in, then panic in Year 13 when they realise how much Year 12 material they need to re-learn. Begin consolidating Year 12 content from the summer before Year 13 — this investment pays off enormously.
Past Papers Are Non-Negotiable at A Level
The gap between knowing content and scoring top marks at A Level is almost entirely bridged by past paper practice. A Level examiners reward students who understand exactly how to apply knowledge to the specific question asked — a skill developed only through repeated practice. Work through past papers with mark schemes from the beginning of Year 12, not just in the final revision period.
Start Your UCAS Application by September of Year 13
The UCAS deadline for Oxford, Cambridge, and most medical courses is in mid-October of Year 13. Even for other universities, strong applications submitted early stand a better chance. Begin drafting your personal statement in the summer before Year 13, get feedback from teachers, and finalise it before the autumn term exams begin. Our UCAS Guide and Personal Statement Tips support every step of this process.
Protect Your Mental Health and Physical Wellbeing
A Levels are demanding, and the pressure of exams alongside university applications is real. Students who look after their sleep, eat well, exercise regularly, and maintain social connections consistently outperform those who sacrifice wellbeing for extra revision hours. Build rest and recovery into your revision timetable as deliberately as you build subject sessions. Sustainable effort over two years beats burnout every time.
