Top 5 Tips for Secondary School Success

Practical advice from our tutors for students in Years 7 to 9.

1

Build a Consistent Revision Habit from Year 7

Secondary school covers far more content than primary. Students who build a weekly revision habit from the very first term in Year 7 find end-of-year assessments far less stressful — and arrive at GCSE with a much stronger knowledge base. Use our Revision Timetable Template to get started.

2

Do Not Let Small Gaps Become Big Problems

KS3 Maths and Science build sequentially — a weak foundation in Year 7 algebra makes Year 9 much harder. If your child struggles with a topic, address it promptly rather than hoping they will catch up. Our KS3 Maths Revision Guide and Science Notes are designed to support exactly this kind of targeted catch-up.

3

Practise Retrieval, Not Just Re-Reading

Re-reading notes feels productive but is one of the least effective revision strategies. Encourage your child to close their notes and write down everything they can remember — then check. This retrieval practice forces the brain to actively recall information, which is what exams actually require.

4

Keep on Top of English Grammar Throughout KS3

Grammar and punctuation underpin performance across every subject — not just English. Students who understand how to write clearly and precisely consistently outperform those who do not, in subjects from History to Science. Use our KS3 English Grammar Checklist for regular self-assessment.

5

Know What GCSE Options Require — Early

By Year 8, students should be thinking about their GCSE subject choices. Some options (like Triple Science or languages) require a strong KS3 performance to access. Understanding entry requirements early allows students to prioritise relevant subjects before formal GCSE preparation begins.
